PERSONALITY
Jack is a fiercely loyal individual who does not believe in leaving a man behind due to personal experiences in his professional career, and this is backed by fierce determination. Whilst he is an honourable and courageous person, he is also a private individual preferring to use humour and sarcasm as a means of deflecting tension and to exhibit an appearance of denseness that belies his true intelligence. Despite having a penchant for irreverence and more than a few marks of insubordination, he's a highly respected military strategist and as an exceptional leader. O'Neill is certainly not without his quirks and he can often be rather expressive in his mannerisms.
INTERESTS: O'Neill has a wide range from Astronomy, Opera to Pottery. He's also a sports enthusiast and enjoys Hockey, Golf, Football, Baseball and Curling. His taste for television includes The Simpsons, which he own the entire collection on VHS. He loves the great outdoors and for relaxation, enjoys nothing more than fishing at his cabin in Northern Minnesota, 20 miles from the nearest town. Despite his insistence that he has never actually caught any fish, he maintains that the act of fishing is more important than catching the fish themselves.

HISTORY
With the activation of the Stargate and the mission to Abydos, Colonel Jack O'Neill was assigned the command of the team. He was still grieving the loss of his son, Charlie who had accidentally shot himself with Jack's own handgun and he believed the mission to be that of a suicide mission. Whilst his divorced wife could not forget, he never forgave himself though he learned to forget even for a little while later on in life, he had not wanted to return to Earth. However, through getting to know the enigmatic archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson and the inhabitants of Abydos, he returned to Earth with renewed hope and he quietly settled into retirement from active service. However, when Senior Airman Carol Weterings was kidnapped after aliens had come through and left by the gate, he was recalled to active duty by General George Hammond. He was forced to confess that they had not entirely completely the previous mission when he realised that Hammond had another nuclear warhead prepared to go through the Stargate to Abydos.
After sending a Kleenex box to ascertain Daniel Jackson's existence, he was authorised to return to Abydos with Kawalsky, Ferretti and Captain Samantha Carter. They made contact with Jackson and were attacked whilst they were on the planet. Ferretti was seriously injured and was just about able to see the co-ordinates which lead the team to Chulak. Events lead to Jackson's wife, Sha're and O'Neill's friend, Skaara, who had become almost like a second son to Jack, to being taken by the Goa'uld. This is also where Jack met Teal'c, the First Prime of Apophis. Jack had seen in the way the warrior held himself that Teal'c did not agree with what was happening and managed to gain enough trust in the Jaffa for Teal'c to help them escape along with the rest of the captured people.
SG-1 later learned of the impending attack on Earth. O'Neill, along with the rest of his team, had not agreed with Senator Kinsey's insistence that the Stargate Program should be shut down. Against orders, they went through the gate and found themselves on one of two Ha'tak vessels controlled by Apophis and Klorel; the son of Apophis who had taken Skaara as a host. Jack had been forced to kill Skaara to stop Klorel from killing Jackson. However, Skaara was later revived with the use of a sarcophagus. With the help of Bra'tac, they managed to sabotage the Ha'tak vessels and stop the attack on Earth, whose defences were unable to do anything against the Ha'tak shields. This validated the continuation of the Stargate Program, though this has never pleased Kinsey.
In the year 1999 whilst exploring P3R-272, Jack unwittingly had the Ancient's Repository of Knowledge downloaded into his brain. Human physiology had not yet advanced to be able to handle such vast amounts of information and it began a cascade of changes, including speaking Ancient, that if not stopped would lead to his own death. His sub-conscious mind however managed to input a whole list of gate addresses into the computer systems and to engineer and build a generator that would provide the power needed to get him to Othala, the Asgard home-world. The Asgard erased the knowledge he had gained and told him of the Alliance of Four Great Races. This meeting has begun the Asgard's interest in O'Neill.
During their numerous missions, Jack O'Neill has earned the respect of many races including the Asgard, the Nox and the Tollans. Amongst the Asgard especially has Jack become renown for the existence of the Ancient Gene in his genetic make-up. This gene is what enables him to be able to use Ancient devices where others in the team cannot. Thor's admiration for O'Neill lead to him electing the Colonel to be the representative for Earth in the negotiations for the Protected Planets Treat and for an Asgard vessel to be named in O'Neill's honour.
Shortly after O'Neill's return from being stuck on Edora due to a meteor shower where he met Laira, the Asgard and the Tollans approached Stargate Command with evidence that Earth had been stealing their technology as well as the technology of the Nox and Tok'ra. O'Neill and Hammond managed to convince them that SGC was not at fault but the Asgard insisted that O'Neill discovered who was responsible. O'Neill relied on his Special Forces training to steal from the SGC and resign and through Maybourne, managed to infiltrate the rogue N.I.D base and alert the Asgard of where their cache of stolen technology lay. The Asgard took book this stolen technology. Rather than risk being beamed up by the Asgard, the rogue team followed O'Neill back through the gate only to be arrested at Stargate Command. Only then is the rest of SG-1 informed of the plan who are somewhat offended on not being filled in though it was entirely necessary.
Along with Teal'c, Jack became stuck inside a time-loop initiated by an alien archaeologist called Malakai with whom SG-1 came into contact with on P4X-639. It does not take O'Neill long to realise he has been having the same breakfast moment just as Teal'c realises he's been having the same morning too. It is up to them to remember how to stop and rectify the problem, though this consists of several loops, some of which they exercise some fun with. Such as playing golf through the wormhole, pottery, biking in the base, learning to juggle and to hand in his resignation just so he could kiss Samantha Carter. After they had succeeded in stopping Malakai from continuing the time-loops, Jackson had asked him over breakfast if he had done anything crazy to which Jack gives a long look at Sam with a sly smile before eating his fruit loops.
With the help of Harold Maybourne, Jack was able to prove that Senator Kinsey had ties with the rogue members of NID after Kinsey had pressurised Hammond to step down. This proves how much merit and loyalty Jack will place in the officers and colleagues he comes to respect.
The death and ascension of Daniel caused Jack to withdraw into himself causing some resentment from Sam. He initially resisted Jonas Quinn and the attempts to get Quinn on them team in place of Daniel. Wounds were still too raw for Jack but he did eventually let Jonas join. It took a while before he eventually admitted after Jonas Quinn returned to his home-world that he was a good member of the team.
Researchers in Antartica found an Ancient frozen in the ice, SG-1 and Janet Fraiser were called in for assistance to help with studying her. Ayiana, as she was named, was carrying a plague that had survived and consequently infected those that were in the base. However, Ayiana healed them with the exception of Jack has Ayiana had no more energy and died soon after. Desperate to save the Colonel's life, SG-1 managed to convince Jack to agree to a temporary blending with a Tok'ra called Kanan. However, because a Tok'ra symbiote is compelled to follow the same principles of the host, he forced Jack to go back for a woman called Shallan of whom Kanan had fallen in love with. However, Kanan's mission failed as he was shot by a staff weapon blast in the attempt to get to the Stargate with Shallan and left Jack's body. This consequently left Jack to the mercy of the Goa'uld in command. Jack was repeatedly tortured to death and revived in Ba'al's attempts to interrogate the Colonel. It was here that Daniel had come to him, though was still an ascendant at this point, and offered to help Jack ascend but Jack refused. It was the rest of the team that managed to get lucky in tipping off Lord Yu and Jack managed to escape when Lord Yu attacked Lord Ba'al's secret base.
Later in 2003, Jack was kidnapped during his sleep by an Asgard called Loki, named for the Norse God of Mischief for evident reasons and was cloned. However, Thor had taken measures and placed a marker in his DNA to prevent manipulation in order to protect Jack's Ancient Gene. Because of this, Cloned Jack did not fully mature. SG-1 managed to capture Loki and sorted out the problem, repairing the DNA.
In the need to find the answer to stopping Anubis' attack on Earth and because Daniel's the only one to be able to translate, Jack voluntarily places his life on the line without so much as a second thought and downloads the information in the Ancient Repository before Anubis' Jaffa can destroy it. They returned only to learn that Hammond had been reassigned and that Dr. Elizabeth Wier, a civilian, had taken his place. They managed to convince her in letting them go by Tel'tak to a place called Proclarush. Here, Jack had sat in a chair made by Ancients, he said only two words "Terra Atlantus" and took a Zero Point Module after revealing they had come all this way only to go back to Earth. Jack had also healed Bra'tac after the Master Jaffa had been betrayed and injured by the other Jaffa to have gone with them.
Jack was instrumental again in helping to save Earth in the Battle of Antartica by using the Ancient Chair in the Antartic Outpost to activate thousands of drone weapons. However in order to save his life, SG-1 were forced to place him in stasis pod. Before eventually erasing his mind, Thor had downloaded Jack's mind into his ship's computer, The Daniel Jackson. With the help of the Ancient knowledge, Jack built the prototype weapon called a disruptor that would render Replicator blocks inert allowing SG-1 to save captured Major Samantha Carter and Orilla.
Back on Earth, Jack was promoted and succeeded Weir as the base commander for Stargate Command. Jack's year of command was something he found slow to get used to. He missed going off world but he later became accustomed to realising what it meant to fill Hammond's sizeable shoes. It was during his time as base commander where the Replicators and Goa'uld were vying for supremacy. He helped co-ordinate a defence with Rebel Jaffa, Tok'ra and the Asgard but refused to help Ba'al however to give the Rebel Jaffa a fighting chance to take Dakara much at the annoyance of Selmak and Jacob. As the Replicators invaded, Samanatha Carter and Jacob Carter managed to activate the Ancient Weapon with the help of Lord Ba'al, they managed to end the Replicator threat completely. This also brought about the end of the Goa'uld empire giving the Rebel Jaffa a huge victory.
After the eventual collapse of the Goa'uld Empire, it seemed all that SG-1 had set out to do had been achieved and was disbanded. Jack was promoted again to Major General and put in command of Homeworld Security at The Pentagon. Major General Hank Landry replaced Jack and Lt. Colonel Mitchell was able to reunite the team as the threats of the Ori began to unfold. Jack was behind asking SG-1 to help Martin Lloyd in making a movie of Wormhole X-Treme! to ensure plausible deniability in case the program was leaked and he was also called in when Daniel Jackson was found to be a Prior. After a heated debate, he was convinced to allow SG-1 to capture an Ori vessel carrying the incomplete Sangraal hoping to send it to the Alteran Home Galaxy and neutralise the Ori.
After capturing who they had thought to be the last of the System Lords, he attended extraction ceremony of Ba'al. It was a few years later when Landry retired and he personally requested assume command of the SGC. His request was accepted.
